This Thursday evening is a decisive match night in the Premier League Darts for both Michael van Gerwen and Luke Humphries. The Dutchman can take a major step toward the play-offs with a win over 'Cool Hand Luke,' while the Englishman must win to keep his Finals Night hopes alive. The pair meet on the thirteenth night of the Premier League in Aberdeen in their opening match.
Van Gerwen sits fourth on 18 points and holds a five-point lead over Humphries, who has amassed 13 points. If 'Mighty Mike' beats the 2024 world champion, he will stretch the gap to seven points, and with just three nights remaining after this one, he would likely be out of the Englishman's reach. If Humphries wins this match, and perhaps even the entire night, he could draw level with Van Gerwen, setting up a genuine fight for the final play-off spots over the last three weeks.
Van Gerwen is fully aware of the stakes. 'Every week now is really important, you need to take a couple of points,' he told the PDC. 'Everyone knows I'm always here to win, and I always give 100%. It's still a long way to go, but it doesn't matter. You need to keep grafting and keep battling, then anything is possible.' He added: 'I messed up a couple of weeks by not winning the games I should have won, but that's the way it is. The pressure is on everyone. You know you have to always deliver. I just have to win games.'
For Humphries, it would be the first time since his debut in 2024 two years ago that he fails to reach the play-offs. In his previous two campaigns he made the final both times, winning it last year. He refuses, however, to throw in the towel. 'Maybe it's going to be one of those years that I'm going to have to fight it out hard and scrape through in the end,' deliberated Humphries. 'I'm going to keep trying, keep pushing, and give it everything that I've got.'
Jonny Clayton and Luke Littler, as the current top two, have already secured enough points and are guaranteed a place in the top four. At the moment, Gerwyn Price (19 points) and Michael van Gerwen (18 points) occupy the final two spots. Gian van Veen, Luke Humphries, and even Stephen Bunting all still have a chance of making the play-offs.
