Gerwyn Price has made himself unavailable for selection for the World Cup of Darts, which is due to take place from June 11-14. The Welsh star's absence paves the way for Nick Kenny to partner Jonny Clayton, who will serve as team captain.
Price's decision comes after he confirmed earlier in the week that he is dealing with health issues and awaiting hospital results. Following his loss in the Premier League, Price posted on Instagram: “No good playing once a week and hopefully I get the results I want in 3 weeks time,” alongside a hospital emoji.
Kenny, currently ranked 60th, is next in line for the spot. Robert Owen, ranked 64th, would have been next up but is lower in the rankings. This situation differs from previous years, when Jim Williams was a strong understudy, though Wales lost in the second round to Croatia on that occasion. Price also had to pull out that year, and Clayton has struggled when not partnered with his regular teammate, whom he sees as the lynchpin of the pairing, despite Clayton being ranked higher this year.
Price had spoken earlier this year about playing in the World Cup of Darts, but with his health uncertainty, he has opted to sit out. Kenny now gets a major opportunity alongside Clayton that he was unlikely to receive otherwise.
