Michael van Gerwen caused a hilarious moment on Saturday evening during the Nordic Darts Masters in Copenhagen. The Dutchman made it clear during his quarterfinal against Viktor Tingström that he was irritated by a man around the stage whose eye-catching outfit strongly resembled Elvis Presley.
The spectator in question appeared in a white suit with glitter details and drew plenty of attention in the arena. Van Gerwen seemed visibly annoyed by the situation and used hand gestures to indicate that the man should leave. Shortly afterward, the eye-catching figure did in fact exit the playing area. That gave the famous saying “Elvis has left the building” a very literal meaning in Copenhagen. Remarkably, the man may not even have been an ordinary fan. The Elvis lookalike was holding a PDC microphone, sparking speculation that he might have been a caller or a member of the organization’s staff. The PDC initially posted footage of the incident on social media but later removed it.
After the incident, Van Gerwen seemed briefly unsettled. Tingström, the world number 92, took full advantage and surged to a surprising 5-3 lead against the Dutchman. The Swede even had a match dart to complete a huge upset but failed to take it. That proved decisive. Van Gerwen battled back into the match, forced a last-leg decider, and ultimately edged it 6-5. With that, ‘Mighty Mike’ escaped an early exit and kept his title chase alive.
Van Gerwen eventually even pushed through to the final of the tournament. There, a nerve-racking clash with Luke Humphries awaited. In a match full of tension, the Dutchman ultimately prevailed 8-7. He also survived defeat there, as Humphries likewise had a match dart in the deciding leg.
