Michael van Gerwen and Gian van Veen are flying the Dutch flag at the World Cup of Darts in Frankfurt this week, but the pair are keeping expectations measured—both for themselves and for the Netherlands’ football team. Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad ahead of the tournament, which runs from Thursday in Frankfurt, the duo discussed their chances in the prestigious national team event.
Van Veen, making his second World Cup appearance after debuting last year alongside Danny Noppert, identified England—with Luke Humphries and Luke Littler—as the main contenders for the title. However, he placed the Netherlands right behind them. “After that I would say we are the favourites. And I wouldn’t say that the Dutch national football team are the second favourites at the World Cup. So yes, I think the chance is greater that we win the World Cup of Darts,” Van Veen said.
Van Gerwen, a three-time World Cup winner alongside Raymond van Barneveld, urged caution. He warned that the team format, which relies on teamwork and chemistry, often produces upsets. “You have to watch out for surprises, just like in football,” he said, noting that countries like Northern Ireland, Wales, and Australia have sprung surprises in the past. The Brabander stressed that one below-par match can have immediate, major consequences.
While both players are openly targeting the title in Frankfurt, Van Gerwen admitted expectations for the Dutch national football team are lower. “Hopefully Malen and Gakpo are in form. But everyone is so negative that it can’t really disappoint. Although I’m also sceptical. In the quarter-finals they could end up facing Brazil, right? Then it’s over. I think we should be very happy if we reach the semi-finals,” he said.
