Gerwyn Price has left the door open for a striking foray into boxing. The 41-year-old Welshman reacted on social media to footage of Jack Kay, better known as Ibiza Final Boss, who claimed his second victory at Misfits Boxing on Saturday night.
Kay faced Kellen Jenkins in Newcastle. The latter was a late replacement. After a tense bout, the judges awarded Ibiza Final Boss the win by split decision. That lifts his Misfits Boxing record to two wins from two fights. Misfits Boxing shared the result afterwards via its official Instagram account. Among the replies was a comment from Price. The former world darts champion kept it brief but made clear he is interested in a possible bout. “Sign me up,” wrote ‘The Iceman’, accompanied by a boxing glove emoji.
Whether that reply will actually lead to a fight remains unclear. Price showing interest in boxing, however, is not entirely surprising. The Welshman has previously spoken about his chances in the ring. Last year, Price set his sights on Jake Paul, the American boxer and social media sensation. At the time, Price said he was far from impressed by Paul. In fact, the darter claimed he could knock out the American with a single punch. His comment on Ibiza Final Boss fits with the confidence Price has previously expressed about his physical potential beyond the oche.
Kay, by contrast, has been actively trying to make his mark in boxing. The Brit first found fame under the name Ibiza Final Boss after videos of his party exploits on Ibiza went viral. His striking persona brought him major attention on social media, after which he also surfaced at Misfits Boxing. Following his win over Jenkins, Kay now stands at two victories from as many contests.
Price himself has an athletic background that extends beyond darts alone. Before his breakthrough on the circuit, the Welshman played rugby. Pool also has his interest. Price previously entered the UK Pool Championship and planned to compete. In the end, he had to withdraw shortly before his match due to preparations for the Premier League Darts play-offs.
Price’s initial “Sign me up” message under footage of Ibiza Final Boss has already been followed by a considerably more direct boxing exchange. Welsh social-media personality Dean Alex, real name Dean Dodd, tagged the former world champion on Instagram and asked: “Want me to retire you early?” “If the money is right, I’d happily put you to sleep,” Price replied. Alex then attempted to turn the exchange into an actual fight pitch, posting: “Gerwyn Price has replied... Wales vs Wales!” and tagging Misfits Boxing and promoter Mams Taylor. “Someone tag Misfits and tell them to get the contracts ready! Dean Alex vs Gerwyn Price. Two Welshmen. One ring. Let’s get it on, baby!”
Alex has built an Instagram following of more than one million and is no stranger to combat-sports content, having previously stepped into the gym for a sparring session with UFC star Paddy Pimblett. Price has therefore now gone further than his original one-line reaction to Ibiza Final Boss. This time he has directly answered a prospective opponent and attached a clear condition to any potential move into boxing: the money would have to be right. There is no indication yet that Misfits Boxing has opened negotiations for the all-Welsh clash.
