Scotland's Cameron Menzies secured his second tournament victory of the year by defeating Gian van Veen 8-4 in the Players Championship 29 final in Den Bosch. Menzies made a blistering start, racing into a 5-0 lead against the home favourite, who is ranked third in the PDC rankings, before closing out the match.
"To go and win another ProTour is awesome. I'm so happy," said Menzies. "This is my fifth year on the tour and I've won four ProTours. That's not bad I suppose. My aim is to make a good life for myself. That's the aim that I think is achievable, but winning a major and having a good run at the World Championship would be amazing. I've put more effort in this year than I ever have because I nearly lost it all and I'm grateful to be in this position."
Menzies, ranked 26th, had considered quitting darts earlier this year after damaging his hand while angrily punching a drinks table following a first-round exit at the World Championship. In July, he was victorious at Players Championship 23 in Leicester, and later that month, he beat world number two Luke Humphries in the first round of the World Matchplay, only to fall ill in his next match.
En route to the final in Den Bosch, Menzies got past Kevin Doets, Jeffrey de Graaf, Wessel Nijman, Benjamin Pratnemer, Jim Long and Nick Kenny. The win marks another significant milestone in a remarkable comeback season for the Scot, who made his World Cup debut for Scotland earlier this year.
