MANBY MAKES HISTORY! 21-YEAR-OLD STORMS TO MAIDEN PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP 31 TITLE WITH 8-2 FINAL DEMOLITION OF KUIVENHOVEN

Charlie Manby announced himself on the PDC ProTour stage in style, storming to his maiden ranking title with an emphatic 8-2 victory over Maik Kuivenhoven in Wednesday's Players Championship 31 final at Maassport Den Bosch. The 21-year-old produced a string of outstanding performances to claim the £15,000 winner's prize, capping off a memorable day by securing his qualification for next month's Mr Vegas Grand Slam of Darts.

Manby had never progressed beyond the quarter-finals of a PDC ranking event before Wednesday, but the Huddersfield youngster showcased his immense potential to break new ground in the Netherlands. His campaign began with a commanding 6-1 demolition of Czech star Karel Sedlacek, averaging 104 before fighting back to defeat Dennie Olde Kalter with consecutive 13-dart legs. A 6-4 victory over Adam Leek followed, before Manby raised his level even further against Dominik Gruellich — averaging a superb 112.16 and winning each of his final four legs in 12 darts to cruise into the quarter-finals.

There, Manby found himself trailing Alan Soutar 3-0 before producing a remarkable turnaround, reeling off six consecutive legs to book his place in the last four. However, his semi-final against Beau Greaves proved a far sterner test. Manby looked on course for victory before Greaves mounted a fightback, but the youngster held firm to prevail 7-5 and set up a showdown with Kuivenhoven.

The Dutchman was bidding to claim a maiden PDC ranking title of his own, but Manby wasted little time asserting his authority in the final, racing into a five-leg lead as his opponent struggled to settle. Kuivenhoven briefly threatened a revival by claiming back-to-back legs, only for Manby to respond with a devastating finish — three consecutive legs in 14, 11 and 13 darts sealing an emphatic 8-2 triumph and a landmark first title.

"It's absolutely amazing. I'm literally lost for words here," Manby said after averaging 99.72 in the final. "There are so many good players here, so it's just crazy that I've actually done it. I knew I was definitely capable of doing what I did today and winning a title, but I'm over the moon. When I was leading against Beau in the semis, that's when I had a bit of nerves, especially when she started coming back! I was gutted to lose out in the World Youth Championship semi-finals for the Grand Slam, but I've managed to actually qualify through this which is ten times better, so it's great."

For Kuivenhoven, the wait for a maiden ranking title continues, although reaching his second Players Championship final of 2026 represented another significant step in his campaign. The 38-year-old survived a scare against Poland's Filip Bereza in the opening round before producing one of his best performances of the day against Darius Labanauskas, averaging almost 104 to progress. He then secured impressive victories over Mike De Decker and Dirk van Duijvenbode to reach the final, only to come up against an inspired Manby in the showpiece.

Van Duijvenbode also enjoyed a productive day on home soil, reaching his second Players Championship semi-final of the season. The Dutchman opened with a dominant victory over Mervyn King, averaging more than 106, before demonstrating his fighting qualities to overturn a 5-3 deficit against Jeffrey de Graaf in the quarter-finals. His run ended in the last four, alongside Greaves, who once again underlined her growing stature on the ProTour with an impressive display in Den Bosch. The Doncaster star climbed to seventh in the Players Championship rankings after producing ton-plus averages in victories over Dutch duo Niels Zonneveld and Kevin Doets, recovering from 5-2 down against the latter to claim another notable scalp.

Doets himself reached the quarter-finals for the 14th time on the Players Championship circuit in 2026, averaging 107 against Darryl Pilgrim and 101 against Mickey Mansell, and also defeated compatriot Michael van Gerwen for the second time in less than a week. De Graaf enjoyed an impressive run of his own, eliminating Dutch number one Gian van Veen and European Championship runner-up Martin Schindler on his way to the last eight. Belgian number one De Decker and Scottish star Soutar completed the quarter-final line-up.

Earlier in the day, Cristo Reyes produced another moment of perfection, hitting a nine-darter during his opening-round demolition of Cor Dekker — the Spaniard's second perfect leg across three Players Championship events. There were also several notable early exits, with Nathan Aspinall among the high-profile names to fall in the first round alongside Jermaine Wattimena, Damon Heta and Joe Cullen.

Attention now turns to Thursday's Players Championship 32, which brings this week's ProTour double-header to a close, with crucial ranking points and qualification places still at stake for the Players Championship Finals and the World Darts Championship.
