Nathan Aspinall defeated Michael van Gerwen 3-1 in the final to win the annual Davey Dodds Memorial Trophy exhibition tournament in Newcastle on Friday night. The event, named after the late former darter Davey Dodds, featured eight players including world-class stars Aspinall and Van Gerwen, who are both expected to compete in a Euro Tour event in Munich on Sunday.
The quarterfinals saw Vincent van der Voort beat Cameron Anderson 3-1, Michael van Gerwen post a 3-1 win against Andy Lynn, Nathan Aspinall prove too strong for Alan Bell with a 3-1 victory, and Robert Thornton edge Dylan Glazier 3-2 to complete the last four. The semifinals offered little drama as Van Gerwen swept aside Van der Voort 3-0, while Aspinall did not drop a leg against Thornton, also winning 3-0.
Aspinall then clinched the title with a 3-1 victory over Van Gerwen in the final, securing the Newcastle Masters at The Fed. The tournament results were shared on social media by MODUS Sports in association with @NESPORTSEVENTS, congratulating Nathan Aspinall on his triumph.
