GERWYN PRICE'S ELITE FORM WITHOUT TITLES BAFFLES DARTS EXPERTS ON DARTSNEWS PODCAST

Gerwyn Price is producing numbers that would normally carry a player to titles, yet the silverware has not followed. Despite reaching a level that, on current evidence, could be the best of his career, the former world champion and world number one finds himself without a major TV win since 2023 and still searching for a ranking title to match his form. This contradiction was at the centre of discussion on the latest episode of the DartsNews Podcast, hosted by Kieran Wood and Nicolas Gayer, who questioned how Price can be playing some of the most complete darts of his life while the biggest prizes continue to elude him.

Wood and Gayer debated whether this is the best version of Price ever seen, with Wood stating, "I'd have to say yes," and Gayer agreeing, "I think we are witnessing prime Gerwyn Price." They highlighted a standout night of Premier League Darts in Manchester, where Price produced a series of dominant performances, including three averages all over 105, with a 112 in there, and a nightly average of 107.74. Gayer noted that in terms of pure level, Price belongs among the top ten the sport has seen, praising his physical condition, equipment stability, emotional control, and increased fan support compared to five or six years ago.

However, the central contradiction remains: Price's elite performances are not translating into titles. Wood remarked, "You can't play this well, and it's not like it's only just started now. He's been playing well for a long time, just without real reward." He identified Luke Littler as a key stumbling block, referencing a recent Premier League final where Price was 5-0 up and threw it away, suggesting a mental hurdle. Gayer added that the dynamic has shifted from when Price held the upper hand earlier in their rivalry.

Looking ahead, Gayer believes that if Littler falls at an earlier hurdle in a major, Price is poised to pick up the title. He also noted that Price doesn't have any money to defend this year, easing external pressure. But the lingering question persists: how long can this level continue without rewards? Gayer warned, "If he doesn't do it now, with this momentum, then he has a problem. How much better can you play, to be honest?" For now, Price's performances and numbers remain elite, but until trophies follow, the dilemma will continue to hang over one of darts' most compelling figures.
