Michael van Gerwen showcased his relaxed and humorous side in a playful PDC sponsor video, sparking plenty of smiles with sharp answers including a cheeky nod to Jonny Clayton. The three-time world champion, seated in a restaurant setting, was challenged to hit doubles between questions from interviewer Becky James in the video produced in collaboration with a hospitality partner.
When asked who he would like to cook for, Van Gerwen immediately named Jonny Clayton. On the follow-up question about what he would prepare, he delivered a typically Van Gerwen response: "Let me make the Indian. It will be so spicy, so he never gets off the toilet."
The Dutchman kept the tone light on other questions too. He said that, as a fan, he wouldn't mind going to a darts tournament in a pineapple costume. "I quite like the sound of that," said Van Gerwen, laughing as he agreed when told he would look good in it. A question about his music taste first drew a dry reply: "No, nothing. Neither to your... blah blah blah," he said with a wink, before naming a few artists including Martin Garrix.
This humorous display comes after Van Gerwen reached the nightly final during Night 10 of the Premier League Darts in Brighton last Thursday. For a long time, Van Gerwen seemed on course for the win against Jonny Clayton, racing into a commanding 5-2 lead and having the match fully under control. However, the Dutchman failed to close it out, missed four match darts, and saw Clayton claw back and snatch the victory. After the Premier League night in Brighton, Van Gerwen impressed again on Friday at an exhibition night in Purfleet. He will look to get some more points on the board in Night 11 in his home event in Rotterdam.
