Ross Smith's quest for a first European Tour title remains agonizingly unfulfilled after he fell to Gerwyn Price in the final of the European Darts Grand Prix in Sindelfingen. The 37-year-old Englishman, who also finished runner-up at the same event two years ago, was crestfallen after the match, telling reporters, "I'm absolutely gutted, but fair play to Gezzy, the better man won."
Smith produced a high-quality campaign throughout the weekend. He opened with a convincing 6-3 victory over Cameron Menzies, throwing six 180s and hitting 60 percent on his doubles. He then edged Josh Rock in a deciding leg while averaging over 98, before defeating German Darts Grand Prix winner Nathan Aspinall 6-4 in the last 16. His most impressive display may have come in the quarterfinals, where he overcame Krzysztof Ratajski 7-5 despite the Pole averaging five points higher. That victory put Smith into a European Tour final for the third consecutive year.
In the final against Price, Smith fought back from 3-0 down to lead 4-3, showing the scoring power to pressure the Welshman. However, a few missed doubles proved decisive as Price seized control to claim the title. Smith reflected on the fine margins at the top level, stating, "It's fine margins. You're playing the best players in the world - if you don't hit your doubles, you're going to get punished."
Despite the disappointment, Smith expressed gratitude to the Sindelfingen crowd, saying, "The crowd was absolutely amazing. Thank you for turning up all weekend, you were brilliant." Looking ahead, the Englishman concluded matter-of-factly, "It is what it is. I'll crack on with the next one."
